Before the renovation, the formal sitting room was dominated by a large, dark brick fireplace that, while architecturally striking, felt heavy and visually overwhelming. Its deep tones absorbed light and anchored the room in a dated aesthetic, drawing attention away from the surrounding space and limiting the room’s ability to feel open or refined. Though the fireplace served as a natural focal point, its weight and color made the room feel more enclosed and less cohesive with the rest of the home.

The transformation began with whitewashing the brick, a thoughtful design choice that preserved the texture and character of the original masonry while dramatically lightening its presence. The softened finish allowed the intricate brick pattern to remain visible, but with a refreshed, airy feel that instantly modernized the space. What was once a dark visual barrier became an elegant architectural feature that reflects light and enhances the room’s sense of scale.

After the update, the fireplace now complements the formal sitting room rather than overpowering it. The whitewashed surface creates a clean, timeless backdrop that pairs beautifully with updated furnishings, artwork, and décor. The room feels brighter, more inviting, and intentionally curated—striking a perfect balance between honoring the home’s original character and introducing a refined, contemporary aesthetic that elevates the entire space.
